Chinchillas are great pets, and can be very affectionate with a lot of personality. That said, chinchillas are not a good first pet. They are delicate and do require maintenance, eg, they need to dust, they can't get wet, the temperature needs to be not too hot, they need playtime, socialization with you, etc
